VMGC Sings at Mom's Day Concert

As the Varsity Men's Glee Club took the stage singing "I Want a Girl," all the ladies in the audience began to swoon. Nothing out of the ordinary, except that most of the women were visiting mothers with their families. As part of the annual celebration of Mom's Day all around the university campus, VMGC made its customary appearance at the Women's Glee Club Mom's Day concert on April 18th. VMGC only had a brief appearance onstage, but they made sure to pack in a varied repertoire as a proper dedication to all the mothers in the audience. After its opening number, VMGC followed with a rousing rendition of "Beviamo," (in Italian AND English) and then Wagner's emotional "Pilgrim's Chorus." What's the only song that could follow such grandeur? Billy Joel's love ballad "She's Got a Way," proving once again VMGC's versatility...and that mothers appreciate such songs just as much as their daughters do. After the excellent reception, a selection by the Other Guys left the audience in stitches, and VMGC closed their appearance with "In Dat Great Gettin' Up Mornin'," a gospel tune that had the whole audience clapping along. Whether their own moms happened to be in the audience or not, each member of VMGC gave a powerful performance in gratitude for the support and strength of all mothers. That, and then the moms had something for the tuxes, too!

VMGC collaborates with Naperville Men's Glee Club

On Sunday, April 19th, the Varsity Men's Glee Club made a trip up north to Naperville to visit our longtime friends, the Naperville Men's Glee Club. The collaborative concert that the Naperville Club hosted featured the University of Illinois Varsity Men's Glee Club, the Other Guys, and several other dance performances and solo/ensemble acts. The sold-out audience was very welcoming, and the afternoon was filled with various songs of brotherhood, spirituality, and secular pieces from both glee clubs. At the end of the concert, the Naperville Men's Glee Club and the Varsity Men's Glee Club joined together to sing "She's Got a Way," "Spanseniye Sodelal," and Randall Thompson's "Alleluia," all resulting with a final standing ovation.

Following the performance, VMGC attended a congratulatory dinner at the house of one of the Naperville Club's members. There, both clubs partook of a veritable banquet. NO ONE WENT HUNGRY THAT NIGHT!!! Everyone was ble to socialize and compare club traditions, European trips (VMGC covered that one...), college life and experiences, and future plans. At the conclusion of the dinner, the clubs again sang together in fellowship, this time singing the rousing songs "Brothers Sing On," "Vive L'Amour," and "Beviamo" (both in Italian and English, of course). VMGC then thanked their hosts in singing the "Big Ten Medley," the "Illinois State Song," and, finally, the Alma Mater. (Let it be known that NO Michigan alums showed their faces at the singing of the Big Ten Medley. A success, I would say!) The long bus ride was definitely worth it-- good fellowship, wonderful music, a successful performance, and new friends. VMGC will definitely be looking forward to singing with the Naperville Men's Glee Club very soon!

Meeting With VMGC Alums and SOM

In addition to our concert this past weekend, we had a wonderful chance to meet with Alums and representatives of the School of Music regarding how to increase membership in VMGC. We were thrilled to see so many Alums in attendance: both physically and remotely. There were close to 30 alumni participating in the meeting, with about 60 people in attendance: both physically and remotely.

The meeting addressed many concerns, but certain issues remain open. At the end of the meeting, the challenge was placed on current VMGC members and Alumni to increase sponsorship and membership with the help of the School of Music.

Spring Concert Theme

After much deliberation, we've decided on our spring concert theme! This year's theme is a play off of the popularity of the Nintendo Wii: specifically games like Wii Music and Wii Sports. The theme: Glii Music. To celebrate our love of puns and pop culture we created Miis, or avatars, for a few members of glee. Check out our poster below to see our choir of Miis.

Our concert is on April 25th at 7:30pm at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are $10 for general public, $7 for senior citizens, and $4 for students. Come out, support Glee, and listen to some sweet tunes. As usual, the night will be memorable and fun for all.
